HJC CL-MAX CLMAX FLIP-UP SILVER MOTORCYCLE Full-Face-HelmetTwo weeks ago I crashed on the highway and did a face plant into the concrete at 75 MPH, then bounced across three lanes of traffic, all while wearing this helmet.Not a scratch on my face or head, and no head or neck injuries at all after slamming my head into the road at least 7 different times.

Not only did it protect me in my crash, but I had put in a few hundred hours of riding while wearing this helmet, and loved it.The easy access of the modular style is why I bought this helmet, but I also benefited from it's superior design.The helmet vents well while riding, is lightweight, and has very little drag (I ride a cruiser without a windshield) so the fatigue factor is minimal.

I would recommend this helmet to anybody who rides, and am buying another one myself to replace the one that just helped save my life.

Daytona Helmets Skull Cap Gloss Black DOT Approved Motorcycle Helmet - SmallDefinitely the closest DOT fit you can get.The Large & Medium shell sizes are 1/2" shorter (front to back), 1/4 narrower (side to side) than a GMAX GM55 Medium.Daytona Large and Medium shell sizes are the same; I bought both.They are light weight and do not work their way loose while riding.Use the Daytona sizing chart; worked out perfect for me.The free bandana was a chuckle; a cheap Dollar Store party prize; threw it in the trash.The helmet bag has a sharp brass eyelet poorly attached to the cloth and may scratch the helmet.The best thing to do is remove the eyelet, or keep the helmet out of the bag.Ride often.I'm thinking about trying the Daytona Quick Release system.

DOT Flat Black Motorcycle Skull Cap Half Helmet - Size : MediumI bought this helmet expecting it would fit me as a sk8 helmet. Of course it didn't, after all it's a motorcycle helmet!!
I have very large head. 61cm (I think something like 24") and the XL fit me perfectly. But as it is a motorcycle helmet, it has much more protection than the sk8's ones. That means it doesn't get too close to my head (as a sk8 one) and I end up looking as a giant mushroom... But than again, that's not a defect, it's just a characteristic.

The only real con I can think of is the chin strap closure. It's not the fast "click" one. And to be honest, I still haven't manage to figure it out. It has two metal rings that the strap passes through, but I couldn't make it so that it slides nicely... maybe that's my fault...

Daytona Helmets Skull Cap Without Visor Dull Black DOT Approved Motorcycle Helmet - MediumThere are many half-helmets out there that advertise "lightest, thinnest".To me, "lightest" is not a show-stopper.I've seen "carbon fiber" or "carbon kevlar" versions at about 25oz, while this one, according to Southwest Research Institute who did the DOT test on it in 2007, reports this helmet at 694 grams, which is 24.48oz.Even so, what is 5 oz either way, when carbon fiber costs three times as much?
The driving functional aspect of these designs is to minimize the wind buffeting effect, and the tendency for the helmet to get blown back on the head.The market appeal is also aimed at reducing the "mushroom-head" look, but that mushroom overhang is also what catches the wind and causes problems for most 1/2 helmet designs.
The helmet I have is a Medium, but their are 4 available shell sizes for 8 fitments.Medium and Large use the same outer shell size.Even with the smaller of the two, I am not experiencing the parachute effect with the helmet at speeds up to 80MPH so far.The liner is comfortable, but the most important feature is adjustable y-straps:
A big problem with most half helmets is that they sew the y-straps in place where they come together at the bottom, usually at a point directly below the ear.The Daytona Helmets' adjustable design allows moving the chin strap forward so that it is actually under the chin and not pulling back against the throat.A strap that can only pull down from a point that is at the middle of the side of the head will allow the helmet to rotate to the rear of the head.Adjusting the strap forward so that the front portion of the y-straps are coming nearly straight down to the chin strap applies more downward retention force to the front of the helmet, so the helmet cannot slide back and rotate to the rear.This is a more natural and comfortable position for the strap under the chin and feels very secure.

I still find it very odd that football, hockey and even combat helmets use a chin cup, but motorcycle helmets are usually designed to pull back against the throat.

The thin liner design that allows for a smaller, closer-fitting outer shell is really the critical design factor, in terms of maintaining the required standard of safety.In the case of this helmet, it has actually been tested to pass FMVSS 218. A number of other manufacturers who make similar "DOT" helmets have actually failed testing after having been on the market for over two years.
