Kicker 08KS4100 4-Inch X 10-Inch 100mm X 250mm Coax Speaker Review

Kicker 08KS4100 4 inch X 10 inch 100mm X 250mm Coax SpeakerI bought these to replace the original dashboard speakers in my 1985 Pontiac Fiero. The original Delco's had foam surrounds that got old and fell apart. There aren't many choices when it comes to 4 x 10's. I chose these because they have a rubber-like surround and tweeters (the Delco's didn't) and the tweeters don't stick up higher than the outer gasket of the speaker. I knew the original gray cloth covered plastic grilles would fit. These speakers did fit perfectly, but I couldn't use the original self tapping screws with the 7mm hex heads. The original screws had a washer head that wouldn't fit into the new speakers. I used some #8 x 3/4" pan head phillips screws I had on hand. These had smaller heads and worked fine, they just thread into the plastic inserts under the speakers. The original grilles fit fine. The original Delco speakers had an oddball 10 ohm impedance (why not the typical 8 ohms....who knows?). These Kickers have a 4 ohm voice coil. They have worked fine for a month and the output stage of the original radio hasn't failed. I don't crank up my volume very high. The Delco's had an oddball GM connector. I just cut the wires and soldered them to the new speaker lugs. The new Kicker's have a 3/16" lug for + and a smaller 1/8" lug for the -. The 1/8" female crimp-on I had fit loosly on the speaker, so I decided to solder to assure a good connection. I doubt if I will ever replace these again anyway.

Now for the sound quality. The original Delco's just had a single cone, no "whizzer" cone or actual tweeter. I thought that these Kicker's would sound a lot brighter because they have a tweeter. I can't hear a huge difference in the high end. There might be a little more sizzle, but not as much as I expected. The low end sounds about the same as the Delco's, too. You can't expect thundering bass from cones with such a small area, but it's adequate for me. Both speakers seem to have about the same efficiency. These sound nice and clean after suffering with the buzzing of the Delco's with the missing foam.

I gave these 5 stars because they are probably about as good as a 4 x 10 can get and they fit like the OEM speakers.
